CR3.1 SAS vs. Spetsnaz

A chain-reaction 3.1 shoot-em up.

This game used the FREE Chain Reaction 3.1 rules from THW.

Here’s where we start:

For a while, the Spetsnaz PEFs didn’t move, but the SAS didn’t hesitate.

The SAS split up to cover their objectives, and the ‘C’ team ran into a squad of the Spetsnaz. Thinking quickly, the SAS shot the Spetsnaz leader in the face.

There were several tense bouts of gunfire until the last SAS squad-member standing pulled back to the base of the stairs and radioed for help. The other SAS squad moved to flank the enemy.

They didn’t make it in time to save the last man, but did manage to shoot the Spetsnaz team up pretty good.

The Spetsnaz regrouped and took out their attacker!

Several turns were spent circling the small building, taking shots at each other around corners. Soon it was just two-on-two.

It was close, but in the end, the SAS were just quicker on the draw, and a better shot when they weren’t. Mission successful, but so many injuries!

Left 5 Dead
Great, another mouth to feed!

As the survivors are preparing to leave, the door kicks open and suddenly a young lady with a pistol is standing in the doorway. Her name is Rochelle, and she is glad for some friendly faces.


“Hey, do you think I could stay with you guys?” she asks.

“Sure,” Louis answers. “We’ve got room for one more.”

“Good, because…”

And that’s when zombies come smashing through the front door!


Meanwhile, outside, “Snipe” runs back behind the tree to give her some breathing room, and to get a better angle on the zombie sneaking up behind her. Once she’s in cover, she shoots it down, because she’s pretty much a bad-ass. The other zombies shuffle after her.


Inside the U-Haul store, Zoey goes nuts and completely fillets a zombie with her katana.


The others pitch in as well, though the third one gives them trouble. Rochelle, perhaps unwisely, peels off a shot at the last zombie, but misses. Outside, a zombie turns and begins shuffling toward the noise.


Francis smashes the last zombie with his crowbar, allowing the others double-time it out of the station. Not to be outdone, Louis fights off another zombie so the others can get past it.


The zombies continue their relentless advance, but “Snipe” clears out all of her visible pursuers. Another zombie lurches at Louis from behind, and he can barely keep his bat between him and its gnashing teeth. Despite the racket, only a couple more zombies wander onto the scene.


Unfortunately, the survivors are split up, and “Snipe” now has time to concentrate on getting revenge on Louis and his friends.

This was a short one. I think that’s turn… 8?

Left 4 Dead
"I hate small towns."

Louis, despite his inexperience (REP4) is leading Zoey, Bill and Francis to a part of Fry Blvd in a small, Arizona town. They’re in desperate need of medical supplies, and are hoping to find some first aid kits or the like in what remains of the local businesses. They come up behind the U-Haul rental place…


A turn goes by of nothing happening… then the sun starts to set, and the daytime becomes evening, which is probably for the best, actually.


Then, from out of the taco place, a group of gangers. A woman and a man and a young adult. Perhaps a family? Louis notices them as they approach in the dimming light.

“Uh, hey! It’s cool. We’ll just wait until you’ve moved on!” he calls out to them, and in response they draw!


Luckily, Louis is jumpy and manages to fire first at the woman and the younger man!


The woman (named “Snipe”) is knocked to the ground, and her ungrateful family scatters in response. She scrambles to her feet and runs for cover behind a tree. Our survivors can no longer see her in the dim light.


The shoot-out, though brief, wakes the nearby zombies, who begin to move. (They moved randomly here, instead of toward the gunfire. Oops.)


The survivors make a break for the inside of the building, and surprisingly find no zombies or even any people. They search for medical supplies, but despite the lucky break of the distraction outside, the survivors can’t find any first-aid kits and so settle for looting the vending machine and break-room for food instead.


As the survivors search, “Snipe” takes cover behind a car and begins firing at the approaching horde.


They keep coming, and she keeps killing them, though all of the racket is literally waking the dead, including one that the survivors didn’t see within the U-Haul building! Thankfully, Francis knocks it down, and Zoey quietly finishes it off with her katana.


That’s the end of turn… 5, I think.

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.
